B.Sc - Cardio Pulmonary and Perfusion Care Technology

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

DURATION : 4 Years (3 Years + 1 Year Internship)

As the name suggests, this course deals with the topic – perfusion technology. The program trains students in various aspects related to perfusion technology. Perfusion is the flow of blood (and other fluids) through the circulatory system or lymphatic system to an organ or tissue. It is a very important process that takes place in our body. Without it, blood carrying oxygen from our lungs won't reach all the vital organs, tissues and parts of our body! Our lungs and heart play an important role in the whole process! Heart-Lung machine is usually used during cardiac surgery or other surgeries that require cardiopulmonary bypass to manage the patient's physiological status. Such surgeries are carried out by a team of skilled Doctors. The team usually consists of cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, operation theater technicians and perfusionists. The main task of a perfusionist is to configure and operate the Heart-Lung machine.

CAREER PROSPECTS:

Perfusionists essentially work in operating rooms in hospitals and surgical centers during heart and lung surgery and in ICUs. Perfusionists keep the surgical team informed of the patient's condition throughout the surgery. One of the main roles performed by Perfusionist is the operation of heart-lung machines that keep the patient alive during serious procedures such as open-heart surgeries. Perfusionists are also key personnel in placing and managing patients on ventricular assisting devices as a bridge to recovery or heart transplantation and supporting patients receiving lung or liver transplants. Perfusionists are usually hired by Government Hospitals, Private Hospitals, Nursing Homes.
